Music of Paul Basler

Paul Basler is Professor of Horn at the University of Florida where he teaches horn and undergraduate composition courses and has been a member of the faculty since 1993. One of the most performed composers of his generation, his music has been received with enthusiastic acclaim throughout the world, the New York Times describing his music as “virtuosic and highly athletic.”

Basler's music is available across numerous publishers, but I am proud that you will find a few select pieces by him available here on this website for PDF purchase/download.

Cool Breeze for two horns and piano was written as a gift for Jeffrey Agrell in loving friendship and great appreciation for his enormous contributions to the musical world. The work takes its inspiration from the North American folk rock music scene of the mid 1960's to early 1970's particularly the music of Mama Cass and the group The Mamas & the Papas. My childhood memories are filled with hearing and singing the music of that era's counterculture whether at home, in elementary school or in our radically progressive, politically and socially active, Vatican II embracing Catholic Church in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. It was an exciting time that continues to inspire and influence my musical and personal life to this day. Cool Breeze received its premiere performance at the 2018 Kendall Betts Horn Camp with James Naigus and Alexis Lovelady on horn and the composer on piano.

Symphonic Dances for Horn and Wind Ensemble was written in June 1997 for Charles “Skip” Snead, Professor of Horn and Director of the School of Music at the University of Alabama, with great admiration and affection.

The work is in four continuous sections, each representing a different dance perspective on rhythmic, harmonic and melodic materials presented in the opening. Symphonic Dances combines materials both American and Kenyan, creating a fusion of sorts between the two cultures.
